We have many festivals in our country. Dasain is the greatest of our festivals. It is celebrated in the month of Aswin. It marks the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahisasur. It signifies the victory of Good over Evil.


The festival is observed for a fortnight. The first nine days are called Navaratri. The goddess Durga is worshipped these days People worship the image of the goddess in their houses. They also visit the temples of the goddess. They make sacrifices of birds and animals before the image of Durga) The last two days of Navaratri are observed with great festivity.


The tenth day is called Vijaya Dasami On this day, people put on fine clothes and visit the houses of their superiors to pay respects. The superiors put Tika on the foreheads of the juniors and Jamara on their heads. They bless the visitors and feed them well. This continues for five days.


Dasain is an occasion of great joy. People indulge in feasting and. rejoicing. They clean their houses, put on new clothes, and eat rich food. Schools, campuses, and offices remain closed. Vijaya Dasami is considered an auspicious occasion. On this day, people embark on new enterprises and start on journeys. This is an occasion of peace and goodwill.


Dasain has also a dark side. People kill birds and animals mercilessly. Some people eat too much and become sick. It is a hard time for the poor. They find it difficult to meet the expenses of the occasion.

हाम्रो देशमा धेरै चाडपर्वहरू छन्। दसैं हाम्रा पर्वहरूमध्ये सबैभन्दा ठूलो चाड हो। यो आश्विन महिनामा मनाइन्छ। यसले देवी दुर्गाको दैत्य महिषासुरमाथिको विजयको प्रतीक हो। यसले दुष्टमाथि असलको विजयलाई जनाउँछ।


यो पर्व एक पन्ध्र दिनसम्म मनाइन्छ । पहिलो नौ दिनलाई नवरात्रि भनिन्छ। आजभोली देवी दुर्गाको पूजा आराधना गर्ने गरिन्छ मानिसहरूले घरघरमा देवीको प्रतिमाको पूजा गर्ने गर्दछन् । देवीको मन्दिरमा पनि पुग्छन् । दुर्गाको प्रतिमा अगाडि चराचुरुङ्गी र जनावरको बलि चढाउने गर्दछन्) नवरात्रिको अन्तिम दुई दिन ठूलो उत्सवका साथ मनाइन्छ।


दशौं दिनलाई विजया दशमी भनिन्छ यस दिन मानिसहरूले राम्रो लुगा लगाएर आ-आफ्ना वरिष्ठको घरमा पुगेर श्रद्धाञ्जली अर्पण गर्छन्। वरिष्ठहरूले कनिष्ठहरूको निधारमा टीका र शिरमा जमरा लगाउँछन्। तिनीहरूले आगन्तुकहरूलाई आशीर्वाद दिन्छन् र तिनीहरूलाई राम्रोसँग खुवाउँछन्। यो पाँच दिनसम्म जारी रहन्छ।


दशैं ठूलो खुसीको अवसर हो। मानिसहरू भोज र भोजमा व्यस्त छन्। रमाइलो गर्दै। तिनीहरू आफ्नो घर सफा गर्छन्, नयाँ लुगा लगाउँछन्, र प्रशस्त खाना खान्छन्। विद्यालय, क्याम्पस र कार्यालयहरू बन्द छन्। विजया दशमीलाई शुभ पर्व मानिन्छ । यस दिन मानिसहरु नयाँ उद्यममा लागेर यात्रा सुरु गर्छन्। यो शान्ति र सद्भावनाको अवसर हो।


दशैंको पनि अँध्यारो पक्ष छ । मानिसहरूले चराचुरुङ्गी र जनावरहरूलाई निर्दयी रूपमा मार्छन्। कतिपय मानिसहरु धेरै खाने र बिरामी हुन्छन्। गरिबको लागि यो कठिन समय हो। उनीहरुलाई अवसरको खर्च धान्नै मुस्किल पर्छ ।
