My favourite hero is General Bhimsen Thapa. The story of this great man is very pathetic. He was the son of Amar Singh Thapa. He was a worthy son of a worthy father. At a young age, he became a private secretary of King Rana Bahadur Shah. He accompanied the King on his exile to Varanasi. He helped the exiled King to return to Kathmandu.
When Rana Bahadur Shah returned, Bhimsen Thapa was promoted to the rank of Kaji. After the death of Rana Bahadur Shah, Bhimsen Thapa became Prime Minister. He held that post for 31 years and served the country well. He was made a general and commander-in-chief. He was the first general and the first commander-in-chief of Nepal.
During his premiership, Bhimsen Thapa introduced many reforms. He was a staunch nationalist. He was deadly opposed to the British. This opposition led to war. Bhimsen Thapa had to sign a treaty with them, but he was able to preserve the independence of Nepal
The elder queen of Rajendra Bickram Shah became jealous of him. She hatched a plot against him. He was unjustly charged with the murder of the youngest son of the king His property was confiscated. and he was sent to jail. On being tried, he was found innocent and acquitted Two years after, he was again charged with the same crime and put into prison. His opponents spread a false rumor of the impending disgrace of his wife Bhimsen Thapa committed suicide in desperation. He preferred death to dishonor. His body was thrown to dogs and jackals Such was the fate of this noble son of Nepal.
