There are many places of interest in our country. Sometimes, I visit some of these places. I like to visit historical places. Recently I visited the town of Gorkha. Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modem Nepal, had his first capital there.
We travelled from Kathmandu to Gorkha by bus. It took us eight hours to reach the town. The journey was tiresome. Gorkha is situated on the top of a hill.
When we reached Gorkha, I was disappointed at the sight of the place. The town has lost its former glory and prestige. Nowadays, it is a small and sleepy town. The main part of the town contains a few small houses and shops. There is an old palace. It houses the office of the Chief District Officer. The town is the headquarters of the Gorkha District
We visited the historical palace of Prithvi Narayan Shah. It is a small building built on the top of a hill. The palace is not very attractive in appearance. Adjoining the palace, there is the temple of Kall. We bowed low before the image of the goddess. Nearby we saw a cave that contains the image of Gorakh Nath. It is said that Prithivi Narayan Shah became great by the blessings of this god. Near the cave, there is Hanuman Dhoka. The visit to these historical places filled our minds with delight.
Gorkha suffers from a shortage of roads. If roads are constructed, the town is likely to develop. Construction of roads is difficult in this hilly region. It will take many years before Gorkha develops into a big town.
