THE PEASANTS OF NEPAL

Nepal is an agricultural country. Most of the people are engaged in agriculture. We find peasants in every part of the country. We ling them in the valleys, on the plains and hills. Some peasants live in towns.

The peasants of Nepal differ from region to region. They are very poor. They eat simple food and wear tattered clothes. They live in small houses or huts. They are generally uneducated and conservative. They are so poor that they cannot send their children to school

Their houses are dirty. They keep animals in their houses. They drink impure water and eat stale food. They rarely wash their clothes They suffer from many diseases. When they fall ill, they cannot have proper treatment. They spend much on feasts and festivals.

The peasants are very hard-working. They work from dawn to dusk. They are helped by their wives and children. The ox is very useful to them. They use simple implements like the spade, the hoe, the plow, etc. They do not know the modern methods of cultivation The peasants depend mainly on agriculture. They do not have any other occupation. In the off-seasons, they remain idle. Their income is low Most of the peasants have no land of their own. They cultivate the land of others.

Many things have to be done to improve their condition. They require roads and marketing facilities. They need banks to borrow money at a low rate of interest. They require good seeds and fertilizers. They need canals, tanks, and wells. They should be given training in modern methods of cultivation. They should be taught some cottage industries

The prosperity of our country depends on the peasants. Wen should all try to help them
