We see the sun, the moon, and the stars in the sky. These are called heavenly bodies. The sun is the biggest of them all. It is 13 lakh times bigger than our earth. It must be awfully big. The sun is very far from the earth. It is 93 million miles away from the earth. That is why the sun appears small from the earth. It looks like a large shining disc.
The sun appears to move in the sky. In the morning, we see it in the east. Slowly, it rises high in the sky and travels westward. In the evening, it sets in the west. It is not the sun that moves, it is the earth that rotates from west to east.
The sun gives light and heat to the earth Its light consists of seven colors. We can see these colors on a rainbow. Without the sun. no life could be possible on the planet.
The earth moves round the sun once a year This causes the seasons. In summer, the earth is nearer to the sun than in winter. In summer, the sun's healing is more significant than in winter. In winter, the sun's healing is pleasant; we like to bask in the sun. The sun is a huge mass of flaming matter and hot gases. It must be terribly hot. The outer portion of the sun is called the photosphere. Its temperature is 6000" C. A red gaseous envelope surrounds the photosphere called the chromosphere:
Sometimes, we have an eclipse of the sun. It is called the solar eclipse. This is due to the shadow of the moon falling on the sun
We worship the sun as a god. Perhaps this is due to the usefulness of the sun-its power to support life. We see an emblem of the sun on our National Flag.
